How do I register?

Why do I need to register?

Registering is free. There's no catch - you don't have to use any of our services if you don't want to. By registering you'll have access to a free trading account to send and receive currencies. Our team of specialists can give you expert advice on the markets, SARS and banking approvals. You'll see live exchange rates from our dealing desk and get expert guidance so you make the right choices, should you choose to use us for your transfer.

Why do you need copies of my identity documents and bank statements?

We're committed to the highest standards in the safety, security and quality of the services we offer. To comply with FSCA and SARB guidelines, we need to know who you are, where you live etc. We never share your data with anyone else. And we store all customer information securely according to POPIA.

Please note that in some instances we may be required to ask for additional details from you in addition to your bank and passport.

Why should I trust you with my money?

We're committed to the highest compliance standards. And your money is safeguarded by law. We open accounts in your name and can't access them. We'll only act on requests made by you, or an authorised individual.

Your money is separate from our own accounts, so even if something happened to our business, your money would still be safe.

How can I transfer my money?

We make transfers quick and simple. You'll have direct phone access to our dealing desks - to advise on rates. Once you've agreed your contract, send your money via EFT bank transfer to your trading account. Leave the rest to us.

How long will it take for my money to arrive in the overseas account?

It usually takes between 24-48 hours. It varies by country, and depends on how quickly you get the funds into your trading account.

We can send money to most countries the day you book the deal. We send a lot of payments, so just talk to us and we can tell you how long your transfer will take.

Will you let me know when you've sent my payment?

Yes. We email you confirmation as soon as we send the currency to your recipient's account.

Can I cancel a transfer?

No. Our contracts are legally binding. Once you've confirmed your transfer you can't cancel it. We may be able to assist in some cases, but there may be a loss that you will need to cover.

What payee details do you need for the beneficiary and how do I find them?

We need the IBAN (International Bank Account Number) for the beneficiary payee.

If you're settling an invoice or making an investment, the IBAN is usually supplied on the invoice or documentation.

It's essential we have the correct IBAN - so we recommend double-checking with the person, or company, you are paying.

Do I need a SARS tax clearance before trading?

If you are a South African resident (you have an SA ID) you can transfer R1 million using your discretionary allowance. If you exceed this amount, you will need a tax clearance approval.

Our in-house tax practitioner will assist with this at no additional cost. We will do our best to make this as quick and seamless as possible, but with the paperwork involved it can take up to three weeks.

If I live outside of South Africa, can you still help me?

Yes. We have many clients who are not resident in SA. Get in touch with us and we can help you open the correct account and apply for any approvals you may need.

What currencies can I transfer?

We offer fee-free transfers on over 90 currencies. If you can't find the currency pairing of your choice online - or if you would like more information about it - please get in touch.

How is my exchange rate calculated?

The exchange rate you see online, or in the news, is called the 'interbank rate'. It's the wholesale rate at which banks trade currencies with each other. This rate is only available to banks, not companies or individuals.

At Exchange4Free, we buy currency in bulk - at bank-only wholesale rates - and pass the savings to our customers. We'll always quote you the currency price upfront before you agree to any transaction.

The exchange rate changes every few seconds, but once we agree a rate with you - that's the rate you'll get.

Will my rate change at any point before I receive my transfer?

No. The rate you agree with us is the rate you get.

Our dealing desk agree the rate with you over the phone when you confirm your transfer. No matter what happens in the markets, your rate will stay the same.

We offer rate alerts and market updates to help you follow the rate movements and decide the best moment to transfer.

How can you do transfers for free?

We don't charge for transactions over R100k because we operate efficiently - eliminating unnecessary costs associated with cross-border transfers. We're transparent about costs, with no hidden charges.

We buy currencies at bank-only wholesale rates, add a small profit for ourselves, and pass the rest of the savings on to you - as a great exchange rate.

We may charge for some additional services, but we'll tell you upfront, so you know exactly what it will cost you.
